Patient Safety Is Our Priority

Many patients have asked questions about recent media attention focused on dental x-rays.

The AAOMR’s (American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology) official statement took issue with recent studies validity. “A number of irreconcilable data collection and consistency problems highlight serious flaws in the study and render the conclusions invalid. Absorbed doses from dental x-rays have declined upwards of 60% in recent years as a result of faster x-ray film speed, the development of digital sensor technology, x-ray beam collimation, and patient shielding. Given that these and other factors were not known to the subjects or reported, it is impossible to recreate a dose-response relationship between the radiation doses subjects received and the development of meningioma.”

One study published online April 10, 2012, found that people with meningiomas (typically benign brain tumors) were more likely to report having had certain dental x-rays in their lifetimes. This study stirred media attention and invited questions from the experts about the way the study was conducted.

The ADA notes that results of the study relied on the individual’s ability to recall their x-ray history from years earlier; when they were taken, what type and how often they were taken.

The bottom line: Digital sensor technology uses up to 90% less radiation than film x-rays, which is why it’s a key component of Atlanta Dental Wellness patient care. It is important to recognize the necessity of dental x-rays as a critical standard of care in a complete and accurate dental diagnosis and to see a dentist that uses the safest digital technology available.
