Biocompatibility Testing
Dental Care That Considers More Than Your Teeth
Because every body is different, Atlanta Dental Wellness takes a personalized approach to the materials used in your dental care. Biocompatibility testing may provide additional information about how your immune system responds to certain chemical groups and materials commonly found in dental restorations.
The results can help our dental team evaluate available material options before recommending fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, dentures, or other restorations.
What Is Dental Biocompatibility Testing?
Dental restorations can contain metals, ceramics, resins, bonding agents, and other compounds. Although these materials are widely used, an individual patient may have sensitivities or concerns related to certain components.
Biocompatibility testing uses a blood sample to screen for immune reactivity to groups of chemicals found in dental materials. The findings can then be compared with the components of thousands of commercially available dental products.
The goal is not to label a material as universally “good” or “bad.” It is to provide another layer of patient-specific information that may help us identify materials better suited to your individual biology.
When Might Testing Be Considered?
Biocompatibility testing may be discussed when:
You have a history of sensitivity or reactions to certain materials.
You have concerns about the materials used in dental restorations.
You are planning extensive restorative or cosmetic dental treatment.
Several different material options are available.
You prefer a more individualized approach to material selection.
You and your dentist believe additional information could be helpful before treatment.
Testing is not necessary for every patient. During your consultation, we can discuss your health history, previous dental experiences, planned treatment, and whether testing may offer useful information in your situation.
How the Process Works
Consultation: We discuss your dental needs, health history, known sensitivities, and treatment options.
Laboratory testing: A blood sample is collected and submitted to the testing laboratory.
Material review: The laboratory findings are compared with the components of available dental products.
Treatment planning: Atlanta Dental Wellness considers the results alongside your clinical needs, examination findings, and the functional requirements of your restoration.
Biocompatibility testing is a screening tool—not a guarantee, allergy diagnosis, or substitute for professional clinical judgment. Results must be interpreted within the context of your overall health and dental treatment needs.
